ENIC

The eligibility criteria for Overseas Trained Teachers (OTTS) are as follows:

Having Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is a necessary requirement for teachers in maintained schools in England. Additionally, most educators in academies and free schools also hold the highly regarded QTS accreditation.

Starting from 1st February 2023, educators who have received training abroad in the listed countries are eligible to seek Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the United Kingdom. This will enable them to commence their employment as certified teachers immediately upon their arrival.

The countries included are:

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • The European Economic Area (EEA)

  • Gibraltar

  • Hong Kong

  • New Zealand

  • Northern Ireland

  • Scotland

  • Ukraine

  • The United States of America.

Furthermore, educators possessing expertise in languages, mathematics, or science, along with a teaching certification to instruct students aged 11-16, originating from any of the seven specified countries, will have the opportunity to verify their compliance with the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) prerequisites and proceed with their application.

  • Ghana

  • India

  • Jamaica

  • Nigeria

  • Singapore

  • South Africa

  • Zimbabwe

In order to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as an internationally trained educator, it is imperative to successfully undergo an ENIC (European Network of Information Centres) assessment, previously referred to as NARIC. This assessment serves to verify the equivalence of your qualifications to those recognized in the United Kingdom, as well as ascertain that your degree was obtained through English-medium instruction. To acquire a Statement of Comparability, one must submit an online application along with the necessary documentation pertaining to their qualifications.

Individuals who do not meet the eligibility criteria for applying for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) have the option to undertake initial teacher training upon their arrival in England or alternatively, apply for International Qualified Teacher Status (IQTS). IQTS is a recently introduced teaching qualification endorsed by the government, which guarantees the automatic conferment of QTS prior to arrival in the UK. It is possible to pursue training in one's current place of residence and employment, without the necessity of visiting the UK. However, it is imperative to complete the training prior to commencing the relocation process. Those who are accepted to undertake IQTS are exempt from the requirement of completing the induction period, thereby expediting the attainment of QTS status.
